Wine economists estimate that it can take as much as 120 liters of water to produce a single glass of wine if you follow the product chain from start to finish. As a result, wine producers are reevaluating the way wine is packaged in a bid to be more eco-conscious.
The weight of wine packaging is a big issue to consider. A standard filled 750 ml wine bottle weighs 1320 grams. In comparison, an empty PET bottle weighs only 56 grams. Mass wine producers are looking towards PET, eco-bottles and Tetra-packs to package wines in a lighter way.
For fine wine, extreme eco-options like Tetra Packs are not viable, as they cannot store wine for a long time. Instead, winemakers are looking towards cutting their environmental footprint by recycling wine bottles and storing wine in kegs.
