Recipe for Pasteis de Nata

This week we hosted J’Something, the very charming lead singer of popular South African band, MiCasa, to present two Portuguese cooking classes as part of our monthly programme.

For those who missed out on these fun hands-on classes where he shared his family recipes, here is one that is quite familiar to even the most traditional of South Africans: the Portuguese version of milk tart!

J’Something’s recipe for Pasteis de Nata

Makes 12

What you need:

500 ml cream

1 ½ cups sugar

6 egg yolks

1 cinnamon stick

1 tablespoon of flour

1 package frozen puff pastry, defrosted Ground cinnamon

What to do:

Place the sugar and 6 egg yolks in a saucepan and mix them together with a spoon.

Add the cream and the cinnamon stick.

Place the flour in a small bowl.

Take some of the cream mixture and stir it into the flour until it forms a thick cream consistency with no lumps.

Then add the flour mixture to the saucepan with the cream.

Gently heat for about five minutes allowing it to thicken to the consistency of custard.

Roll the pastry onto individual cups and pour in the cream mixture.

Bake in a pre-heated oven 180 degrees Celcius, for about 15 minutes or until golden.

Remove from oven and sprinkle with cinnamon before serving.
