‘THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG’ AUTHOR IN CAPE TOWN

In 2006, a French novel titled L'élégance du hérisson (The Elegance of the Hedgehog) by a little-known author became a surprise bestseller. Fueled by critical praise and word of mouth endorsement, the novel with an initial print run of 4000 sold over a million copies. Translated into six languages, the book’s publishers released its fiftieth reprint in 2007 and it stayed number one on the French best-seller lists for 30 consecutive weeks, beating out commercial titles by the likes of Dan Brown.

The unassuming author of the book, Muriel Barbery, is a philosophy professor who currently lives in Japan, where she is writing her third novel (her first, Gourmet Rhapsody was published in English in 2009).

On Tuesday 18 May, Barbery will be in Cape Town at The Book Lounge in Roeland street to talk about her books. Visit The Book Lounge’s site to RSVP.
